New York State Ostomy Supplies Insurance Bill

New York State Ostomy Supplies Insurance Bill
December 20, 2013 Yoely Drummer
Hi Everyone,

A Bill has been introduced to the New York State Assembly (A8137) and the New York State Senate (S5937) to require health insurances to cover the cost of “Ostomy Supplies”. A majority of people with an Ostomy will have to wear a Pouching system for the rest of their lives. Still, some major medical insurances, including some that are state sponsored, do not cover these essential supplies. the provision of suitable products enables people to resume normal, productive lives, in addition to saving avoidable treatments and hospitalizations with all their attendant issues.

In January 2014 legislation supported by our friends at the United Ostomy Associations of America (UOAA) and the Wound Ostomy Continence Nurses Society (WOCN) will be introduced in the New York Legislature, and will require all major insurances to cover Ostomy supplies. The United Ostomy Associations of America (UOAA) represents people who have undergone Ostomy surgery, and the Wound Ostomy Continence Nurses Society (WOCN) represents the specialist who care for people who are living with an Ostomy.

We ask that you do whatever you can to ensure passage of this important legislation. (Note: At this time, this proposal is for the New York State residents only, If you are not a New State resident, but have a relation or friend in New York who can support this cause, please forward them this email).
