The pain is still raw, and the loss so profound, Dr. Greenstein was a world-renowned IBD surgeon who was a Professor of Surgery at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai since 1968, Through most of his long career, Dr. Greenstein maintained one of the busiest inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) surgical practices in New York City.
Dr. Greenstein contributed more than 150 publications to the literature on surgical approaches, the majority of which have been on inflammatory bowel disease. More importantly, we will always remember Dr. Greenstein’s incredible surgical skill in the most complex cases of IBD, his patience and compassion as a clinician, and his ever-gentle manner. he was a strong advocate for our organization JCCSG, being a sounding board of advice, guidance, and affection. His patients and colleagues adored him, as did the generations of residents and medical students that were fortunate enough to learn from him.
As his Son, our dear friend, Dr. Alexander J. Greenstein, Associate Professor of Surgery, Mount Sinai Hospital, once said:
“My father pretty much made it possible for everything. I owe him a lot. It’s been terrific as a kid, he was a wonderful father and now as a partner, a wonderful mentor. I’m sure I could have made it, but it has certainly been amazing to work with him, help him and have him lead the way. We’ve complimented each other really well, and he’s brought out the best in me.”

We send our heartfelt condolences to Dr. Greenstein’s family. Especially to his son, our dear friend, Dr. Alexander, May the family be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.
